Hosting WordPress on AWS or Google Cloud: What to Plan First

Before moving WordPress to a cloud platform, settle these decisions about databases, media, caching and backups.

Cloud platforms make it possible to run WordPress with high availability, but only if a few decisions are made up front.

Database

A managed database service removes patching and backup chores from the web servers and makes it possible to scale them independently.

Media uploads

When more than one server runs WordPress, uploads must live in shared storage — an object store with a CDN in front of it is the usual pattern.

Caching layers

Combine a page cache for anonymous visitors, an object cache for database queries, and a CDN for static assets.

Backups and recovery

Automate database snapshots and storage versioning, and rehearse a restore before you need one.

Security

Keep secrets out of the codebase, restrict administrative access, and keep WordPress, themes and plugins updated.
